Microsoft Patch Tuesday 2026: 1,417 CVEs, Including Exploited Shell Bypass and Exchange RCE
Microsoft released 1,417 patches on Oct 13, 2026, covering a wide range of products. Seventy-six of those are rated critical, and seven critical vulnerabilities require no customer action. The most urgent items are CVE-2026-96951, an already exploited Windows Shell Security Feature Bypass, and CVE-2026-70571, a high-complexity Remote Code Execution flaw in Microsoft Exchange Server.
CVE-2026-96951: Windows Shell Mark of the Web Bypass
This vulnerability allows an attacker to bypass the Mark of the Web (MOTW) protection that Windows applies to files downloaded from the internet. The bypass is achieved by crafting a malicious message that, when delivered via e-mail or instant messaging, contains a file that triggers the MOTW check. If the user opens the file, the bypass permits execution of arbitrary code. The source indicates that the vulnerability is already exploited in the wild, meaning that attackers have demonstrated a working exploit.
Affected versions: All Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019/2022 builds that include the default Shell component.
Mitigation: Apply the latest Windows update that patches the Shell component. Disable automatic file downloads from untrusted sources and enforce MOTW checks via group policy.
CVE-2026-70571: Exchange Server Remote Code Execution
A high-complexity RCE flaw exists in Microsoft Exchange Server. An attacker sends a specially crafted e-mail that triggers the vulnerability during content conversion. The flaw allows execution of arbitrary code on the Exchange server with the privileges of the Exchange service account. No exploitation has been observed yet, but the attack surface is significant in environments that process large volumes of email.
Affected versions: Exchange Server 2016, 2019, and 2023.
Mitigation: Deploy the Exchange patch released on Oct 13, 2026. Consider disabling content conversion for external mail or applying transport rules that strip potentially dangerous MIME parts.
Windows DHCP Server: Ten Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities
The DHCP server contains ten RCE flaws, five of which are rated critical. These vulnerabilities can be triggered by a malicious DHCP request that exploits buffer overflows in the server’s packet parsing logic. The source lists the vulnerabilities but does not provide exploitation evidence.
Affected versions: Windows Server 2019 and 2022 DHCP services.
Mitigation: Apply the DHCP patch bundle. Restrict DHCP traffic to trusted subnets and monitor for anomalous DHCP packets.
Office and .NET Framework: Multiple Critical Flaws
The update includes numerous critical vulnerabilities across Office and the .NET Framework. Several of these are elevation of privilege (EoP) and remote code execution (RCE) bugs that affect both desktop and server components. The source lists CVE-2026-108398, a .NET Framework security feature bypass that could allow application control bypass, and CVE-2026-70007, a .NET Framework RCE.
Affected versions: Office 365, Office 2021, .NET Framework 4.8, and ASP.NET Core 6.0+.
Mitigation: Install the latest Office and .NET patches. Disable legacy authentication protocols and enforce application whitelisting.
Logging and Detection Guidance
Defenders should review the following logs for indicators of exploitation:
- Windows Security Event Log for Event ID 4688 (process creation) with suspicious command lines.
- Exchange Message Tracking logs for anomalous MIME parts or unusually large attachments.
- DHCP logs for malformed packets or repeated connection attempts from unknown IPs.
Implementing a layered approach—patching, hardening, and monitoring—will reduce the attack surface.
